Cambodia Today:

Cambodia is a study in contrasts. Homeless families live on the streets of Phnom Penh next to the Grand Palace and its famous pagoda covered in thousands of pure silver tiles. Internet cafes with state-of-the-art computer equipment sit next to an orphanage that cannot afford $3 mosquito nets to protect the children from malaria.

But while poverty and need is blatant and difficult to ignore, there is an undercurrent of hope and joy that is just as present in everyday life. The people of Cambodia are resilient, loving, industrious, and eager to share their world with anyone who is interested in experiencing it. Sensitive travelers who interact with local Cambodians can expect to find incredible generosity and a genuine interest in sharing the Khmer culture. Whether it is an invitation to share a family meal at the home of a local guide or an afternoon of patient instruction in the pronunciation of helpful phrases, most Cambodians will go out of their way to ensure you feel like a guest instead of a stranger.

Life for most Cambodians is difficult. The median annual income in Cambodia is less than $500. Most families are large and there are no government-sponsored programs to help with housing, food, employment, or health care. There is no free education. Almost all children have to work to help support their families, and even more fortunate families who can send their children to school still need income from those children to help pay for school supplies and tuition. But even with all of the hardships, the atmosphere of Cambodia is lively and joyful. People smile and sing in the streets. There is a rich heritage of art, music, and dance that refuses to be suppressed by the difficult conditions and uncertain political atmosphere.

Most importantly, Cambodians are survivors who refuse to be daunted by circumstance. They will continue to work hard to improve their lives and their communities, regardless of the many obstacles of everyday life. Supporting the arts in Cambodia will help the beautiful people of this country live better lives while continuing the rich traditions that make Cambodia such a unique and amazing place.
